No place like here

2019

collective WXY project at Seoul Art Space Seogyo centre

<No place like here> is a project turning one of the furnished table in Seokyo Art centre into the better spot called ‘Myengdang’ among the tables in Seokyo exhibition place and caféteria.

Feng-Shui geography, harmonizing everything with surroundings which connects to the flow of mountains, land, wind and water with life, is widespread in where I live. Although it is not easy to explain why the phenomenon exists or what causes it in scientific way, many people living in Asia believe it like a common sense and it affects to even real estate price. It is easily observed in the city as if there are several rules of nature making a better place.

By following the principle of commonly observed ‘Feng-Shui’ phenomenon, the project set up the Already-made conditions to recreate the environment where the project takes place. This project attempt to invite people to the inside of  ‘Myengdang’ rather than appreciating and thinking the piece of art work in a distance. Hope this project could be a place where people can go whenever they want to feel relaxed escaping the busy urban network and to be able to have enjoyable time as the “Myendang” is meant to be.

  • a. Build an 'Already-made conditions' (1-5) by focusing only on observed features and phenomena among the prerequisites of feng shui.

             [Already-made Conditions for 'Myeongdang']
 1. When the house faces south, Mountain on the back, looking over the water.
 2. The land in north is higher than south.
 3. A stream of water descends from the top of mountain to the river in the south.
 4. The wind blows from the north.
 5. The house(=table) should face south for the sun.

  • b. Using ready-made items and objects commonly found in the surrounding area, implement them in the exhibition hall in accordance with the 'Already-made conditions'.
  1. Relocate (or duplicate) one of the tables used in an existing art cafe
  2. Reset the 4 cardinal points based on the repositioned table position. (ex. A direction facing the entrance of SAC will be set as a south.)
  3. Create a mountain by stacking objects behind the table. Stack up to a certain height using bricks and abandoned materials around the SAC.
  4. Based on natural phenomena that water flows from the top of the mountain, install an industrial plastic water tank on the constructed mountain (b-3).
  5. By using straws, paper cups, and plastic bottles, install water streams starting from the water tank and descending downwards.
  6. Fill the industrial plastic water tank (b-4) with ice so that the water flows through the faucet (b-5) little by little.
  7.  Install the artificial north wind (air circulator) and southward artificial lighting (solar neon signs) based on the repositioned table position.
  8. The features and natural phenomena mentioned above are constructed by used items that are easily and naturally found during the project.

  • c. Considering the safety of visitors and audiences, give them sufficient explanation before using the table.
  1. The direction of the water stream (b-5) is set to a position which is not disturbing the moving line of the cafe users using the relocated table (b-1).
  2.  Café users who use tables placed in the exhibition hall should be fully informed about the experimental procedures and intentions mentioned above.
